LEXINGTON, Va. -- Johns Hopkins used an 84-yard touchdown drive in the final 1:20 of regulation and scored another touchdown in overtime to defeat Washington and Lee, 21-14, on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field.
The Generals (0-1) went up 14-7 on a 10-yard touchdown run by Chris Sullivan (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights) with 1:20 remaining in regulation.
However, Johns Hopkins senior quarterback Rob Fernand (Wayne, N.J./DePaul) led the Blue Jays on a 6-play, 84-yard drive capped by a 34-yard touchdown pass to sophomore wide receiver Brian Wolcott (Harding, Pa./Wyoming Area) with 15 seconds remaining to knot the game at 14-14.
In the overtime period, Fernand found Wolcott again for a 24-yard gain to the one-yard line then called his own number one play later to give Hopkins the 21-14 lead. The JHU defense then held on four plays to preserve the overtime victory.
Sullivan led the W&L offense with 152 yards and one touchdown on the ground. He also caught three passes for 28 yards and totaled 28 yards on returns for 208 all-purpose yards. Sophomore wide receiver Taylor Callaham (Owings Mills, Md./McDonogh) caught four passes for 52 yards and the game's opening touchdown with 9:43 remaining in the third period.
Junior quarterback Peter Dean (Vienna, Va./James Madison) completed 12-of-28 attempts for 146 yards, one touchdown and one interception, while senior linebacker Matt Stavish (Sterling, Va./Park View) paced the defense with 11 tackles, two sacks and one interception.
Fernand completed 19-of-34 attempts for 239 yards and one touchdown. He was picked off three times. Wolcott snared four passes for 75 yards, while sophomore running back Adam Cook (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) rushed for 70 yards and a touchdown on eight carries. Junior defensive back Paul Longo (Kensington, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) led the JHU defense with seven tackles and one interception.
Washington and Lee will be in action again on Saturday as it travels to Guilford for a 1:00 pm contest.
