LYNCHBURG, Va. – Washington and Lee freshman guard Ian McClure (Louisville, Ky./DuPont Manual) scored a career-high 24 points to help lead the Generals to a 66-59 victory over Lynchburg in ODAC men's basketball action on Sunday afternoon.
McClure, who hit the game-winning shot against Emory & Henry on Wednesday evening, tallied his points on 5-of-10 shooting from the field and 12-of-13 shooting from the free throw line.
The Generals, who never trailed in the first half, grabbed a seven point lead (18-11) with 6:49 to go in the first stanza on a layup from sophomore forward Hamill Jones (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's). W&L extended its lead to nine points (31-22) at the half.
Lynchburg (2-20, 1-14 ODAC) began the second half on an 11-2 run to tie the game at 33-33. The Hornets grabbed their biggest lead of the afternoon at 44-40 on a three-pointer from Ashby Tarkington with 8:59 to play.
However, the Generals outscored Lynchburg 12-3 over the next four minutes to claim a 52-47 lead with 4:40 to play. W&L connected on 10-of-12 free throws in the final minute to seal the victory. McClure was a perfect 8-of-8 down the stretch.
W&L (6-15, 4-12 ODAC) junior forward Scott Hettermann (Falls Church, Va./Landon) scored 14 points and handed out five assists. Freshman center Mark Franceski (Moscow, Pa./North Pocono) tallied four points, a career-high nine boards and two blocked shots.
Lynchburg was led by Tarkington who scored 15 points. Philip Saunders added 14 points and six rebounds in the losing effort.
For the game, W&L shot 22-of-41 (.537) from the floor. The Generals, who entered the game shooting just 57.2 percent from the charity stripe, nailed 18-of-26 (.692) attempts on the afternoon.
The Generals will return to action on Thursday evening when they host non-conference foe Mary Washington for a 7:00 pm game.
