SALEM, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women's basketball team saw its season end on Thursday evening as the Generals were defeated by Emory & Henry, 75-58, in the opening round of the ODAC Tournament at the Salem Civic Center.
Emory & Henry (22-4), the No. 3 seed, raced out to a 34-23 halftime advantage and never looked back in winning its 14th straight game and school-record 22nd contest.
The Generals (12-14), the No. 6 seed, were led by senior forward Jessica Mentz (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial), who tallied 29 points and tied a career-high with 18 rebounds. The ODAC Player of the Year, Mentz finishes her career with a school-record 1,742 points. Senior center Megan Babst (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) notched 14 points and 10 rebounds, while senior guard Sarah Schmidt (Topeka, Ken./Hayden) recorded 13 points and four assists.
Senior guard Kelly Smith paced the Wasps with 18 points and four assists. Junior forward Jenny Gibson tallied 16 points, while sophomore forward Erin Connelly finished with 14 points and 18 rebounds.
Emory & Henry advances to face second-seeded Bridgewater in the semifinals on Friday afternoon.
