COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Washington and Lee wrestling team claimed one runner-up finish and two third place finishers at the Centennial Conference Championships at Ursinus College on Saturday afternoon.
Overall, the Generals finshed sixth of six teams with 28 points. Western Maryland was crowned team champion with 106.5 points. It was followed by Muhlenberg (80.5), Ursinus (70.5), Gettysburg (39), Johns Hopkins (32) and W&L.
W&L senior 174-pounder Ivan Zdanov (Frederick, Md./Frederick) finished as the runner-up in his weight class. After defeating Joe Getz of Muhlenberg, 9-1, in the semifinals, Zdanov lost to Andy Chencharik of Western Maryland, 7-6, in the finals. Zdanov finishes the season with a record of 20-7.
Senior 197-pounder Ezra Morse (Central Point, Ore./Crater) and sophomore 184-pounder Joe Mueller (San Diego, Calif./Mount Carmel) finished third in their respective weight classes.
After losing to Ursinus' Travis Allred (2-1 in a tiebreaker) in the semifinals, Morse claimed two victories in the consolation round, including a pin, to finish third. Mueller defeated Mike Yuhaniak of Johns Hopkins, 8-0, in the quarterfinals, before falling to Mike Mergott of Ursinus, 8-6, in the semifinals. Like Morse, Mueller came back to claim two victories in the consolation round to finish in third place.
W&L concludes the 2001-02 season with an overall record of 3-7.
