Women's Basketball Clinches Berth In ODAC Tournament With 60-53 Win Over VWC

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's basketball team clinched a berth in the ODAC Tournament with a 60-53 victory over Virginia Wesleyan on Thursday evening at the Warner Center.

Senior center Megan Babst (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) led the Generals attack by recording game-highs in points (32), rebounds (18) and blocked shots (4).

The Generals (11-13, 8-11 ODAC) jumped out to 17-10 lead eight minutes into the game behind 13 points from Babst. However, the Marlins clawed back with an 8-0 run to take an 18-17 advantage with 7:20 to play in the first stanza. W&L would outscore Virginia Wesleyan, 13-8, over the remainder of the first half to assume a 30-26 lead at halftime.

W&L claimed its largest advantage of the evening at 44-35 with 11:30 to play in the game. The Marlins chipped away at their deficit and managed to cut it to four points (46-42) with 7:41 to play. However, that was as close as Virginia Wesleyan got the rest of the game.

Babst recorded her 32 points by making 15-of-26 shots from the floor. Senior forward Jessica Mentz (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) tallied 16 points and 11 boards for the victors.

The Marlins (6-17, 5-14 ODAC) were paced by sophomore guard Devin Allen (Machipongo, Va./Northampton) who totaled 18 points. Junior guard Angelique Cavanaugh (Charlottesville, Va./Charlottesville) added 12 tallies in the losing cause.

The Generals return to action on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Hollins for their regular season finale at 2:00 pm.
