LEXINGTON, Va. – Despite a career-high 22 points from senior guard Sarah Schmidt (Topeka, Kan./Hayden) the Washington and Lee women's basketball team was defeated by Emory & Henry, 73-65, on Tuesday evening at the Warner Center. The victory was the Wasps 12th straight and 18th in their last 19 games.
The Generals (10-13, 7-11 ODAC) fell behind 27-17 midway through the first half, however, clawed back to trail by only five points (39-34) at halftime.
W&L grabbed its first lead of the second half (46-45) on a three-pointer from Schmidt with 13:01 to play. The Wasps used a 15-7 run over the next nine minutes of action to assume a 60-53 lead with 4:14 left. The Generals managed to cut the deficit to three points (66-63) on another three-pointer from Schmidt with 1:04 to play in the game. However, on the ensuing possession E&H's Dawn Chewning (Roanoke, Va./William Byrd) nailed a three-pointer and the Wasps converted 4-of-4 free throws down the stretch to ice the victory.
Schmidt tallied her 22 points on 8-of-11 shooting, including 5-of-6 from beyond the arc. Senior forward Jessica Mentz (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) recorded 16 points and six rebounds, while senior center Megan Babst (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) notched 14 points, six boards and three blocked shots.
Four players from Emory & Henry (20-4, 16-3 ODAC) reached double figures in points led by senior guard Kelly Smith (Duffield, Va./Rye Cove) who scored 18 and grabbed eight rebounds. Sophomore forward Erin Connelly (Morgantan, N.C./Freedom) tallied 15 points, eight boards and four steals, while sophomore guard Danielle Moore (Fort Chiswell, Va./Fort Chiswell) chipped in with 15 points. Senior forward Jenny Gibson (King & Queen, Va./King & Queen) was the other Wasp to record double figures with 12 points.
The Generals return to action on Thursday evening when they host Virginia Wesleyan for a 6:00 pm game.
