W&L Women's Basketball Falls To Roanoke, 71-57

LEXINGTON, Va. – Roanoke junior guard Katrina Williams (Salem, Va./Glenvar) totaled 17 points, five rebounds, five steals and four assists to lead the Maroons to a 71-57 victory over Washington and Lee in ODAC women's basketball action on Friday evening at the Warner Center.

The Maroons jumped out to a 14-2 advantage 5:10 into the contest behind 10 points from Williams. Roanoke extended its lead to as many as 16 points in the first stanza and claimed a 32-17 lead at halftime.

Roanoke grabbed its largest advantage of the game (51-32) with 9:47 to play in the game on a layup from freshman forward Kayce Smith (Chattanooga, Tenn./The Baylor School). The Generals did manage to cut the deficit to 12 points, however, could get no closer as the Maroons forced 25 W&L turnovers and held the Generals to a 36 percent shooting for the game.

W&L (9-10, 7-8 ODAC) was paced by senior center Megan Babst (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) who notched a game-high 24 points, 10 rebounds and two blocked shots. Senior forward Jessica Mentz (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) tallied 15 points, a career-high 18 rebounds and three steals.

Roanoke (10-7, 9-4 ODAC) junior guard Meredith Evans (Floyd, Va./Floyd County) was the only Maroon other than Williams to reach double-figures in points as she scored 10.

The Generals will return to action on Sunday when they host non-conference foe Shenandoah for a 2:00 pm game.
