LEXINGTON, Va. -- Sophomore guard Ian McClure (Louisville, Ky./DuPont Manual) tied a school record with seven three-pointers and scored a career-high 27 points in leading the Washington and Lee men's basketball team to a 69-58 win over Southern Virginia on Monday evening at the Warner Center.
McClure hit his seven three-pointers in eight attempts lifting his season three-point percentage to 60.0 percent (15-25).
The Generals (3-1) trailed 31-28 at the half, but took the lead for good when sophomore forward Hamill Jones (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's) hit a layup with 7:29 remaining for a 50-49 lead. The game remained nip-and-tuck until W&L scored the final nine points of the contest.
Senior forward Scott Hettermann (Falls Church, Va./Landon) joined McClure in double figures with 11 points. He also tallied a career-high seven assists and four rebounds. Sophomore center Patrick Neuman (Great Falls, Va./Langley) added six points and a career-high nine rebounds.
Southern Virginia (4-6) was paced by senior guard Brian Beckstrand (St. George, Utah), who tallied 19 points. Sophomore center Ryan Farnworth (Salt Lake City, Utah) posted 13 points and nine rebounds, while sophomore forward Dave Tarwater (Chandler, Ariz.) added 12 points.
The Generals forced 20 SVU turnovers and held a 43-30 advantage in rebounds.
Washington and Lee will return to action on Wednesday as it hosts Guilford for an 8:45 pm contest.
