W&L Women's Soccer In ODAC Final With 2-1 Win Over Va. Wesleyan

SALEM, Va. -- The 14th-ranked Washington and Lee women's soccer team earned a berth to the ODAC Championship match and established a new school-record for victories with their 15th win in a 2-1 win over Virginia Wesleyan on Friday afternoon in Salem, Va.

Virginia Wesleyan opened the scoring when Marybeth Shanks scored off assists from Morgan Gunn and Julia Green. But, less than three minutes later, the Generals evened the score when a Virginia Wesleyan player headed senior Jenny Thomas' (High Point, N.C./Central) flip-throw into her own net at the 74:53 mark.

Then, with just 3:21 remaining before the teams would head into overtime, junior forward Fontaine Marcoux (Washington, D.C./Potomac) scored the game-winner off a pass from senior defender Lindsey Duran (Colleyville, Texas/Fort Worth Day).

Sophomore Emily Barker (Clifton, Va./Mount Vernon) made eight saves in the W&L net. Marlins netminder Laura Wiederwax turned back four shots.

With the win, W&L avenged its lone loss of the season, a 1-0 decision it dropped in its first match on September 7 in Norfolk, Va.

The Generals will play Lynchburg on Saturday at 1:30 pm for the ODAC Championship and an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament. On September 18, W&L tied the Hornets, 1-1, in Lynchburg, Va.
