LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women's soccer team tied the 1997 squad's team-record for wins in a season as they registered their 14th victory on Saturday, 2-0, against Bridgewater in a first round ODAC Tournament match at the Liberty Hall Fields.
Sophomore forward Molly Plummer (New Orleans, La./Sacred Heart) headed in fellow class- and position-mate Maggie Hope's (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) cross to break a 0-0 deadlock at the 49:32 mark. Senior midfielder Jenny Thomas (High Point, N.C./Central) also registered an assist on the play. W&L (14-1-3), which held a 22-4 edge in shots, scored its second goal at 82:29 when freshman midfielder Gina Von Sternberg (Houston, Texas/Episcopal) scored by striking a loose ball into the Eagles' net after Thomas flip-threw it into the BC box.
In the W&L net, sophomore Emily Barker (Clifton, Va./Mount Vernon) made two saves for her fifth shutout of the season. Bridgewater (9-7-2) senior Julianne Blevins (Pylesville, Md./North Harford) made eleven saves for the Eagles in 85 minutes of action. Michelle Urrutia (Chantilly, Va./Chantilly) relieved her for the final five minutes, posting two saves.
The Generals will play in the ODAC Semifinals for the 14th straight season on Friday when they play second-seeded Virginia Wesleyan at Roanoke. The time of the match has not yet been determined.
