W&L Men's Soccer Falls, 2-1, In Double Overtime To Southern Virginia

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Freshman forward Benjamin Griffin (Falls Church, Va.) scored at 107:20 of the second overtime to lift the Southern Virginia men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Washington and Lee on Tuesday at the Liberty Hall Fields.

W&L (3-6-1) opened the scoring in the 49th minute when senior forward Brad Murphy (Mantoloking, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) leapt into the air and hammered a cross from sophomore midfielder Brian Pirkle (Lexington, Va./Woodberry Forest) into the back of the net. However, that would be the last goal for the Generals, as their scoring opportunities were continuously thwarted by Southern Virginia's freshman goalie Chris Pierson (Varnville, S.C.), who made 10 saves for the afternoon.

The Knights (10-1-1) got their first goal, tying the game at 1-1, at 79:40 when junior forward Paul Johnson's (Chantilly, Va.) shot found the back of the Generals' net. The game remained in a 1-1 deadlock until Griffin's overtime game-winner.

Senior Tim Foley (Darnestown, Md./Georgetown Prep) turned away five shots in the Generals' net.

W&L will be back in action this Friday when it hosts Lynchburg for a 4:00 pm match.
