W&L Volleyball Wins Goucher Invitational Tournament

BALTIMORE, Md. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team won matches against Chowan, Marymount and Elizabethtown to win the Goucher Invitational Volleyball Tournament on Saturday in Baltimore, Md.

In the first round of play, W&L defeated Chowan by scores of 30-12, 30-15, 30-22. Sophomore outside hitter and tournament MVP Michelle Chastain (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier Prep) paced the Generals with 12 kills. Sophomore outside hitter Emily Wolfing (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) and freshman middle blocker Susan Gaillard (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) each registered eight kills, and freshman setter Christine Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) amassed 39 assists and 10 digs.

In the 30-14, 30-15, 30-16 win over Marymount, Chastain recorded 21 kills and eight digs to lead the Generals. Gaillard notched 10 kills while Gladysz contributed 35 assists.

The Generals (17-4) rode Chastain's 21 kills and nine digs for a 32-30, 30-17, 33-31 championship victory against Elizabethtown. Wolfing (15 kills, nine digs) and Gaillard (11 kills, five blocks), along with senior outside hitter Stacey Kimmel (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights) and sophomore libero Jennifer Lux (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox) helped key the victory. Lux and Kimmel combined to make 31 digs, and Gladysz tallied 54 assists.

Freshman middle blocker Taylor Gibson (San Diego, Calif./Point Loma) joined Chastain, Kimmel and Gladysz on the All-Tournament team.

The Generals will be back in action next Thursday at 5:00 pm when they compete in the Christopher Newport Tournament.
