W&L Field Hockey Drops 3-2 Decision to Catholic

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Catholic University overcame a 2-0 halftime deficit for a 3-2 win over Washington and Lee in field hockey action on Sunday afternoon at the W&L Turf Field.

The Generals (9-8) assumed their 2-0 lead as sophomore defender Erin Rathbone (Darnestown, Md./Northwest) scored on a penalty shot with 28:17 remaining in the opening period. Sophomore forward Kristen Brown (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) then scored off an assist from freshman defender Katharine Lester (Wilmington, Del./Friends) with 4:34 left in the half.

The Cardinals (6-9) began their comeback with 30:57 remaining as freshman forward Christy Engstrom (Pheonixville, Pa./Spring-Ford) found the cage with a penalty shot. Sophomore forward Rebecca Clark (Pasadena, Md./Seton Keogh) then scored goals at the 24:19 and 15:24 marks for the 3-2 win. Freshman midfielder Jamie Punyko (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) assisted on Clark's first goal.

Freshmen goalkeepers Elise Gelinas (Rosemont, Pa./Agnes Irwin) and Courtney Harrison (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) split time in goal for the Generals. Gelinas made eight saves and Harrison stopped two shots.

Senior Katie Iannacone (Havertown, Pa./Villa Maria) logged all 70 minutes in goal for the Cardinals, making 10 saves.

The loss ended Washington and Lee's regular season. The Generals will resume action in the ODAC Tournament on Sat., Nov. 2, as they host Virginia Wesleyan at a time yet to be determined.
