LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men's soccer team evened its overall record at 7-7-2 (5-3 ODAC) with a 4-1 defeat of second-ranked Virginia Wesleyan this Saturday afternoon on a soggy Liberty Hall Fields pitch. Senior forward Brad Murphy (Mantoloking, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) keyed the Generals' attack with two goals and one assist.
The Marlins (15-1-1, 6-1-1 ODAC) struck first at 32:01 when senior midfielder Josh Nolz (Onancock, Va./Nandua) scored off an assist from freshman midfielder Evan Siddall (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair). However, W&L bounced back to even the score before halftime on a goal from sophomore midfielder Brian Pirkle (Lexington, Va./Woodberry Forest) at the 37:47 mark.
After the break, W&L controlled the match, both outscoring (3-0) and outshooting (9-4) VWC. Murphy recorded his first goal of the game at 52:22 off an assist from junior midfielder Jacob Stoehr (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights) to put the Generals ahead, 2-1. W&L's third and fourth goals came at 76:14 and 79:23, and were scored by freshman midfielder Keith Sullivan (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights) and Murphy.
In the Generals' net, senior goaltender Tim Foley (Darnestown, Md./Georgetown Prep) made four saves. Junior Sean Wheaton (Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville) stopped three shots for the Marlins.
W&L will be back on the pitch this Wednesday at 3:00 pm for its final regular season match when it hosts ODAC-rival Bridgewater.
