LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee junior quarterback Sean McGarvey (Lutherville, Md./Calvert Hall) completed 25-of-46 passes for 301 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Generals past Sewanee, 26-14, on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field.
The Generals (3-4) assumed a 20-0 halftime lead as McGarvey found junior wide receiver Jonathan Brimer (Dandridge, Tenn./Jefferson County), senior tight end Jay Thomas (Houston, Texas/Kincaid) and senior wide receiver Dyllan Rankin (Statesville, N.C./Woodberry Forest) with scoring strikes of 20, 6 and 21 yards, respectively.
The Tigers (4-4) stormed back in the third quarter as senior quarterback Kirk Holtgrewe (Paris, Tenn./Henry County) scored on touchdown runs of 2 and 10 yards to cut the W&L lead to 20-14 with 8:27 remaining in the third quarter.
W&L senior running back Chris Sullivan (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights) capped the scoring with a 45-yard touchdown run with 9:30 remaining in the fourth quarter to give the Generals their fifth straight win over Sewanee.
McGarvey's career day paced the Generals offense. His 301 yards were the most by a W&L quarterback since the 1999 season. Sullivan rushed for 126 yards and one touchdown on 29 carries, while Thomas caught seven passes for 51 yards and the one touchdown as W&L racked up a season-high 517 yards of total offense. Junior linebacker Ben Krasnoff (Towson, Md./Towson) led the Generals' defense with 14 tackles.
Holtgrewe paced the Sewanee offense with 25 yards rushing and 132 yards passing. Junior running back Justin Askew (Rome, Ga./Model) rushed for 136 yards on 23 carries, while sophomore wide receiver Don Rodgers (Bowling Green, Ky./Bowling Green) caught seven passes for 67 yards. Freshman defensive back Will Smith (Roswell, Ga./Pope) led the Tiger defense with 14 tackles.
Washington and Lee will be in action again on Saturday as it travels to second-ranked Bridgewater. Game time is set for 1:00 pm.
