LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee field hockey team won its fourth-straight match with a 3-1 defeat of St. Mary's (Md.) on Saturday afternoon at the W&L Turf Field.
The Generals (9-7) jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a goal by sophomore midfielder Kitt Murphy (Richmond, Va./St. Catherines) with 23:40 left on the clock. W&L then took a 2-0 lead into halftime when freshman midfielder S.B. Northen (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) scored off assists from Murphy and junior sweeper Maitena Moure (Mar del Plata, Argentina/Holy Trinity) with 9:00 remaining in the first half.
St. Mary's (4-9) cut the lead in half by scoring its sole goal less than four minutes into the second half when junior midfielder Kate Story's (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) shot found the back of the W&L cage.
Moure provided the final 3-1 margin when she scored off a pass from Murphy on a short corner after time had expired.
In the W&L goal, freshmen goaltenders Courtney Harrison (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) and Elise Gelinas (Rosemont, Pa./Agnes Irwin) each played 35 minutes, combining to make five saves. Sophomore Whitney Fahrman (Easton, Md./Easton) and freshman Megan Lehr (Elkton, Md./Rising Sun) split the time in the Seahawks' cage, turning back seven shots.
The Generals return to action on Sunday when they host Catholic for a 2:00 pm contest.
