LEXINGTON, Va. -- Five different players scored goals as Washington and Lee defeated Rhodes College, 5-0, in field hockey action on Sunday afternoon at the W&L Turf Field.
The Generals (7-7) opened the scoring at the 27:40 mark of the first period as sophomore midfielder Kitt Murphy (Richmond, Va/St. Catherines) scored an unassisted tally. Junior sweeper Maitena Moure (Mar Del Plata, Argentina/Holy Trinity) also scored an unassisted goal at the 15:17 mark to give W&L a 2-0 halftime lead.
Freshman midfielder S.B. Northen (Richmond, Va./Collegiate), sophomore defender Erin Rathbone (Darnestown, Md./Northwest) and junior forward Kelly Taffe (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) all scored goals in the second half to provide the final margin. Rathbone's goal occurred on a penalty stroke. Murphy, Moure and exchange student Joanna Slack (Coventry, U.K./King Henry VIII School) all recorded assists in the second half of play for the Generals.
For the game, W&L held a 22-1 advantage in shots and an 11-2 edge in penalty corners.
Freshman goaltenders Courtney Harrison (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) and Elise Gelinas (Rosemont, Pa./Agnes Irwin) combined on the shutout for the Generals.
Rhodes (7-7) freshman goaltender Alice Cowley (Louisville, Ky.) posted 11 saves on the afternoon.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Thursday as it travels to Ashland, Va., to take on Randolph-Macon. Game time is slated for 4:30 pm.
