W&L Men's Soccer Drops Match To Catholic, 4-3

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Freshman midfielder Cameron Bassiri (Potomac, Md./Churchill) recorded a hat trick to propel the Catholic men's soccer team to a 4-3 win over Washington and Lee University on Saturday at the Liberty Hall Fields.

Bassiri put the Cardinals (7-5-1) on the board first at 9:29 after scoring on a long, weaving run through the W&L defense. The Generals responded, evening the game at 1-1 less than a minute later (10:20) when sophomore midfielder Brian Pirkle (Lexington, Va./Woodberry Forest) scored from senior forward Brad Murphy (Mantoloking, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy). However, Catholic carried a 2-1 lead into halftime when Bassiri scored his second goal on the afternoon at the 27:48 mark.

In the second half, W&L (5-7-2) matched the Cardinals goal-for-goal, but were never ever to tie the match. Bassiri completed his hat trick at 71:38, making the score 3-1 Catholic. Generals' junior midfielder Jacob Stoehr (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights) made the score 3-2 when his penalty kick found the back of the net, but Catholic answered again with a breakaway goal by senior midfielder Keith Cappo (Philadelphia, Pa./William Penn Charter).

Pirkle added his second goal for the Generals at 89:14 for the final 4-3 margin.

Senior goaltender Tim Foley (Darnestown, Md./Georgetown Prep) turned back five shots for W&L. In the Catholic net, senior Todd Magin (Fredericksburg, Va./Courtland) made six saves to earn the victory.

W&L will be in action again this Wednesday when it travels to Eastern Mennonite for a 4:00 pm match.
