WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Washington and Lee football team held a 7-0 lead after one quarter then saw Catholic University score 33 unaswered points in a 39-20 loss to the Cardinals on Saturday afternoon in Washington, D.C.
The Catholic run included three touchdown passes from senior quarterback Bill Sutton to sophomore wide receiver Nick Bublavi, the last of which was a 67-yarder to make the score 26-7 just 5:54 into the second half. Senior running back Tokollo Moffat added a 50-yard touchdown run and sophomore linebacker Dave Beety scored on a 37-yard interception return during the run.
W&L (2-3, 2-1) sophomore wide receiver Taylor Callaham (Owings Mills, Md./McDonogh) scored two fourth quarter touchdowns for the Generals. He paced the W&L offense with six catches for 86 yards and the two scores. Senior running back Chris Sullivan (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights) rushed for 57 yards and a touchdown on 24 carries. Freshman quarterback Greg Tweardy (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) completed 11-of-23 passes for 177 yards and two touchdowns filling in for the injured starter, junior Peter Dean (Vienna, Va./James Madison). He was intercepted three times. Junior safety Ted Maffitt (Houston, Texas/Episcopal) led the defense with 14 tackles.
Bublavi led the Catholic (2-3, 1-1) offense with seven catches for 126 yards and three touchdowns, while Moffat rushed for 113 yards and one touchdown on 18 carries. Sutton completed 14-of-23 passes for 234 yards and three touchdowns. Senior linebacker Ryan Welsh led the Catholic defense with 11 tackles.
Washington and Lee returns to action next Saturday as it hosts Hampden-Sydney for a 1:00 pm contest.
