LEXINGTON, Va. -- Senior goaltender Tim Foley (Darnestown, Md./Georgetown Prep) recorded the 16 1/2 shutout of his career as the Washington and Lee men's soccer team defeated Lynchburg, 4-0, on Friday afternoon at the W&L Turf Field. Foley now holds the W&L record in that category, eclipsing the previous standard of 16 set by E.J. Murphy.
The Generals (4-6-1, 3-3) took a 1-0 lead when senior forward Brad Murphy (Mantoloking, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) headed in junior midfielder Jacob Stoehr's (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights) corner kick at 21:14 of the first half.
W&L added three unanswered scores in the second half, with Murphy, sophomore midfielder Brian Pirkle (Lexington, Va./Woodberry Forest) and freshman midfielder Keith Sullivan (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights) each adding goals.
In earning his record shutout, Foley turned away one shot. For the Hornets (3-9-1, 1-4-1), sophomore goalie Daniel Ruch (Ridgefield Park, N.J./Ridgefield) made three stops.
The Generals take to the pitch again Saturday afternoon when they host Savannah College of Art & Design for a 3:30 pm match.
