W&L Women’s Basketball Defeats Virginia Wesleyan, 59-44

NORFOLK, Va. -- Senior center Megan Babst (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) tallied 22 points and 11 rebounds to lead Wasington and Lee to a 59-44 win over Virginia Wesleyan in ODAC women's basketball action on Tuesday evening.

The Generals opened the game on a 10-4 run keyed by eight points from senior guard Sarah Schmidt (Topeka, Kan./Hayden). However, the Marlins would battle back to take a 21-20 lead with 4:30 remaining in the opening period.

From there, W&L outscored the Marlins 21-7 in the closing minutes of the first half and opening minutes of the second half to assume a 41-28 lead that it would not relinquish.

For the game, the Generals shot just 31.4 percent (16-51) from the floor, but hit 24-of-31 (.774) free throws. The Marlins (2-8, 1-6) went to the foul line just 11 times, connecting on six attempts.

For W&L (4-6, 2-4), Schmidt and senior forward Jessica Mentz (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) each tallied 12 points. Mentz also added eight rebounds.

Sophomore guard Devin Allen led the Marlins with 14 points.

Washington and Lee will be in action again on Thursday as it travels to Randolph-Macon Woman's College for a 7:00 pm contest.
