W&L Falls To Eastern Mennonite, 56-52

LEXINGTON, Va. – Eastern Mennonite freshman forward Jenny Cline (Harrisonburg, Va./Turner Ashby) scored 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Royals to a 56-52 victory over Washington and Lee on Friday afternoon at the Warner Center.

The victory snapped an eight-game winning streak for the Generals over EMU. The Royals last defeated W&L on Feb. 4, 1997.

The Royals grabbed their biggest lead of the first half (20-14) with 4:53 to play after junior center Lisa Bergey (Goshen, Ind./Bethany Christian Hesston) converted a layup off an assist from junior guard Emily Mullet (Harrisonburg, Va./Eastern Mennonite). The Generals (3-5, 1-3 ODAC) closed the first half on an 8-2 run to tie the score at 22-22 at halftime.

EMU (5-4, 1-3 ODAC) grabbed the lead for good with 15:55 to play on a layup from junior center Emily Misak (Hutchinson, Kan./Chaparral Hesston).

The Generals, who found themselves trailing 54-47 with 1:09 to play, did manage to cut the Royal lead to as little as two points (54-52) with 19 seconds to play. However, sophomore guard Heather Maslauskas (Hedgesville, W.V./Hedgesville) nailed two free throws with 13 seconds left to ice the victory.

W&L senior guard Sarah Schmidt (Topeka, Kan./Hayden) tied her career-high with 16 points. She also tallied four assists and three rebounds. Senior forward Jessica Mentz (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) recorded her seventh double-double in eight games with 13 points and 12 boards. Senior center Megan Babst (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) scored 12 points, grabbed six rebounds and blocked three shots.

Misak scored 14 points and notched six rebounds for the victors. Mullet, who came in leading all of Division III at 32.2 points per game, was held to a career-low four points on 1-of-7 shooting.

W&L returns to action when it hosts Bridgewater at 4:00 pm on Saturday afternoon.
