W&L Women's Basketball Defeats RMWC, 60-52

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's basketball team broke a three-game losing streak with a 60-52 victory over Randolph-Macon Woman's College on Wednesday evening at the Warner Center.

The Generals (9-9, 7-7) jumped out to a 21-6 advantage with 7:45 to play in the first half behind nine points from senior forward Jessica Mentz (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial). The WildCats then used an 8-0 run over the next three minutes to cut the lead to 21-14 with 4:19 to play in the first stanza.

W&L, which held a 25-15 lead at halftime, used a 10-3 run over the first four minutes of the second half to assume a 17 point lead (35-18). The Generals led by double digits until the 3:06 mark of the second stanza when RMWC cut the deficit to 50-42. However, that was as close as the WildCats would get as the Generals claimed the eight point victory.

Mentz led W&L with a game-high 26 points and 12 rebounds. Senior center Megan Babst (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) tallied 14 points, 10 rebounds and tied a school record with six blocked shots. Freshman guard Bethany Dannelly (Raleigh, N.C./William G. Enloe) notched nine points and nine assists.

The WildCats (1-17, 0-14) were led by sophomore guard Amy Dameron (Fredericksburg, Va./Courtland) who tallied a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds.

The Generals return to action on Friday evening when they host Roanoke at 7:00 pm.
