LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee woman's basketball team tied a school record with its fifth consecutive victory by defeating Hollins, 57-33, at the Warner Center on Friday evening.
The Generals (8-6, 6-4 ODAC) grabbed a 10 point advantage (29-19) at halftime as senior forward Jessica Mentz (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) scored 11 points and grabbed 10 boards in the first stanza.
W&L then used an 11-4 run to open the second half and grabbed a 40-23 lead with 12:10 to play on a jumper from senior center Megan Babst (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel).
W&L finished 23-of-48 (.479) from the field, while Hollins shot only 12-of-52 (.231) from the floor. The Generals also outrebounded Hollins, 39-28.
The Generals were led by Mentz, who finished with 19 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Babst also notched a double-double with 19 points and 11 boards. Freshman point guard Bethany Dannelly (Raleigh, N.C./Willaim G. Enloe) scored six points and dished out a game-high six assists.
Hollins (5-7, 2-6 ODAC) was led by junior guard Lauren McKee (Vinton, Va./Roanoke Valley Christian) who scored eight points and grabbed six boards.
W&L returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Roanoke for a game at 5:30 pm.
