W&L Women’s Basketball Upsets Emory & Henry, 77-62

EMORY, Va. -- Senior center Megan Babst (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) tallied a career-high 34 points and 12 rebounds to lead Washington and Lee past Emory & Henry, 77-62, in ODAC women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon.

The Generals (6-6, 4-4) assumed a 19-13 lead with 10:30 remaining in the opening period with Babst scoring 17 of the team's 19 points during the stretch. W&L pushed its advantage to 36-25 with 4:03 remaining on another Babst basket. For the 6-foot-1 Babst, the hoop marked her 1,000th career point.

Emory & Henry (8-4, 5-3) rebounded from a 43-31 halftime deficit to cut the Generals lead to 57-53 with 8:38 remaining, however, the Generals immediately used a 7-0 run to assume a 64-53 lead and cruised to the win.

Babst went 13-of-19 from the field and 8-of-9 from the foul line. Senior forward Jessica Mentz (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) added 20 points and 10 rebounds, while freshman guard Bethany Dannelly (Raleigh, N.C./Enloe) chipped in with 10 points and nine assists. For the game, the Generals shot 55.1 percent (27-49) from the field and hit 22-of-23 (.957) free throw attempts.

The Wasps were led by Kelly Smith, who totaled 16 points and seven rebounds. Erin Connelly added 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Washington and Lee will be in action again on Wednesday as it hosts Lynchburg for a 7:00 pm contest.
