Hornets Sting Generals in ODAC Contest, 75-71

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Senior forward Philip Saunders (Staunton, Va./Robert E. Lee) tallied 21 points, seven rebounds and four steals to help lead Lynchburg past Washington and Lee in ODAC men's basketball action on Saturday afternoon at the Warner Center.

The Generals (4-8, 2-5) led 37-30 at the break and held a 49-42 lead with 13:57 remaining in the game. However, the Hornets used a 15-2 run over the next 6:40 to take a 59-53 lead and never looked back in claiming their first ODAC win of the season.

W&L did slice the LC lead to 73-71 with seven seconds remaining, but Saunders converted two free throws with six seconds left to seal the win.

Both teams displayed hot shooting in the contest as W&L shot 55.1 percent from the floor and Lynchburg hit 54.9 percent of its shots, including 65.4 percent in the second half.

Washington and Lee was led by junior forward Scott Hettermann (Falls Church, Va./Landon), who scored a career-high 25 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Freshman guard Ian McClure (Louisville, Ky./DuPont Manual) added a career-high 17 points on 4-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc.

Freshman guard Ashby Tarkington (Chester, Va./Thomas Dale) recorded 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting for the Hornets (2-12, 1-6). Freshman center Ryan Pehanik (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) and freshman guard Jared Hale (Centreville, Va./Chantilly) added 12 points and 10 points, respectively.

Washington and Lee will be in action again on Sunday as it hosts Hampden-Sydney for a 3:00 pm contest.
