WASHINGTON, D.C.. -- Washington and Lee senior forward Andrew Grimes (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay) scored with less than two minutes remaining in regulation off an assist from sophomore forward Bret Grote (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) to force a 2-2 tie with Catholic on Saturday afternoon. It was the first game of the season for the Generals.
The Cardinals struck first just 2:30 into the game as freshman Greg Castellani (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming Valley) scored his fourth goal of the season. Freshman Dan Finn (Alexandria, Va./Bishop Ireton) made the score 2-0 as he scored off an assist from Gregg McGuirl (Iselin, NJ/JFK Memorial).
W&L's offense was able to cut into the lead late in the first half as sophomore midfielder Jacob Stoehr (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights) scored the Generals first goal of the 2001 season to make it 2-1 at the half. Senior defender Paul Wallace (Roanoke, Va./Patrick Henry) assisted on the goal.
W&L goalkeeper Tim Foley (Darnestown, Md./Georgetown Prep) made two saves, while Catholic goalkeeper Todd Magin (Fredericksburg, Va./Courtland) made nine saves.
The Generals outshout Catholic, 27-6.
The Generals return to action on Wednesday when they host neighborhood rival VMI at 4:00 pm on the Liberty Hall Fields.
