ASHLAND, Va. -- Randolph Macon quarterback Hunter Price connected with wide receiver Derrick Jackson on a 19-yard touchdown pass with 15 seconds remaining to lift the Yellow Jackets to a 28-24 victory over Washington and Lee on Saturday afternoon on Day Field.
The Yellow Jackets (4-1, 2-0 ODAC) marched 95 yards in just 1:24 for the winning touchdown.
Washington and Lee (1-3, 1-1 ODAC) had a chance to put the game away after sophomore defensive back Ted Maffitt (Houston, Texas/Episcopal) intercepted a pass from Price and returned it 19 yards to the Yellow Jacket 23-yard line with 3:44 to play. But on fourth-and-three from the Yellow Jacket 5-yard line, sophomore quarterback Peter Dean (Vienna, Va./James Madison) threw an incomplete pass to junior wide receiver Jay Thomas (Houston, Texas/Kinkaid) in the back of the endzone.
After a scoreless first quarter, Randolph-Macon jumped on the board first as running back E.J. Bush scored on a 1-yard run. The extra point made it 7-0. W&L responded with 53 seconds to play in the first half when Dean connected with Thomas from four yards out. It was Dean's first touchdown pass of his career. Senior Brad Wiginton's (Plano, Texas/Plano Senior) extra point tied the score at 7-7 at halftime.
The teams traded touchdowns in the third quarter as W&L senior running back Marc Watson (Marietta, Ga./Walton) scored on a 3-yard run with 9:50 to play. The Yellow Jackets tied it at 14 as David Strong scored on a 5-yard run with 6:13 left in the third quarter.
Bush scored his second touchdown just 53 seconds into the fourth quarter on a 3-yard rush. Wiginton connected on a 29 yard field goal with 9:33 to play that sliced the Yellow Jacket lead to 21-17. Dean then connected with Sullivan on a 71 yard touchdown pass with 5:27 left that gave W&L a 24-21 lead.
W&L was led by Sullivan (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights), who collected a career high 202 yards on 35 carries and caught two passes for 78 yards and one touchdown. Sullivan finished the day with a career high 300 all-purpose yards. Thomas caught four passes for 61 yards and one touchdown. Sophomore linebacker Ben Krasnoff (Towson, Md./Towson) led the defense with 12 tackles, including two for losses.
Price finished 23-of-32 for 356 yards and one touchdown. He was intercepted twice. Price also had 18 carries for 68 yards. Bush finished the day with 33 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries. Justin Basdikis caught 12 passes for 167 yards. Jackson had two catches, both on the final drive, for 38 yards. Trey Henderson led the Yellow Jacket defense with 11 tackles.
The Generals will return to action next Saturday when host Catholic at 1:30 pm.
