ASHLAND, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women's soccer team won its first game of the 2001 season as it defeated host Randolph-Macon, 3-1, on Thursday afternoon.
The Generals got on the board quickly as freshman midfielder Martha Allgood (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) scored her first collegiate goal off an assist from sophomore forward Fontaine Marcoux (Washington, D.C./Potomac) with 2:38 gone by in the first half. Marcoux, W&L's leading scorer last season, tallied her first goal of the 2001 campaign 10:09 into the game as she put home a shot off an assist from sophomore defender Meghan Hayde (Massapequa Park, N.Y./St. Anthony) and the Generals took a 2-0 lead at halftime.
Senior midfielder Kate Bidwell (Pensacola, Fla./Escambia) put the game out of reach by scoring her second goal of the season off a free-kick with 84:15 gone by. Randolph-Macon avoided the shutout as Allison Picarde scored with 1:56 to play.
Freshman goalkeeper Emily Barker (Clifton, Va./Portsmouth Abbey) earned her first collegiate victory by making five saves for W&L.
The Generals return to action on Saturday as they travel to Eastern Mennonite for a game at 2:00 pm.
