W&L Ends Season With A 78-54 Loss To Roanoke

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Senior forward Suzanne Webb (Narrows, Va./Narrows) scored a team-high 19 points and added seven steals as Roanoke defeated Washington and Lee, 78-54, in ODAC women's basketball action on Sunday afternoon in the Warner Center.

The game was tightly contested through the first 10 minutes and W&L led, 15-12, with 11:25 left in the first half. However, the Maroons (18-6, 16-4) ripped off a 28-8 run over the next 9:38 and took a 42-28 halftime lead. Eight different Roanoke players scored in the first 20 minutes.

Roanoke opened the second half on a 12-4 run in the first 2:52 led by five points by Webb and the Maroons cruised to the 24-point victory.

Roanoke placed four players in double figures led by Webb who was 8-of-13 from the floor. Junior center Crystal Barrett (Roanoke, Va./Northside) added 15 points and 10 rebounds. Junior forward Jill Quesenberry (Willis, Va./Floyd County) and sophomore guard Katrina Williams (Salem, Va./Glenvar) tallied 12 and 10 points, respectively. The Maroons shot 47.2 percent for the game and forced 25 W&L turnovers.

Junior center Megan Babst (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) led the Generals with 23 points and 13 boards and tied a school record with six blocks, while junior forward Jessica Mentz (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) added 18 points and 14 rebounds. Mentz finished the season with a W&L single-season record 496 points. Junior guard Carter Thomas (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) added eight assists to finish the season with a total of 85, breaking the single-season record of 83 set by Jessica Morton during the 1996-97 season. Washington and Lee (8-16, 6-14) also set a team record for blocks in a game (11).
