LEXINGTON, Va. -- Hollins placed three players in double figures, forced 29 General turnovers and clinched the eighth seed for the ODAC Tournament with a 56-46 win over Washington and Lee in ODAC women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon in Lexington, Va.
W&L (8-15, 6-13) took an early lead, 10-5, with 12:23 left in the first half led by eight points from junior center Megan Babst (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel). However, Hollins took a lead that it would not relinquish after a three-pointer by freshman guard Jennifer Carpenter (Covington, Va./Allegheny) to make the score 11-10 with 10:30 remaining in the first half.
HU (10-13, 7-12) outscored W&L 16-7, over the final 10 minutes of the stanza and led 27-17 at the break. Senior guard Rosse Hopkins (Roanoke, Va./Northside) led the way with nine points in the first 20 minutes of action.
Hollins kept the Generals at bay for most of the second half until freshman forward Sarah Michaels (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Academy) nailed a pair of free throws with two minutes left to cut the lead to 50-46. Hopkins, however, hit all six of her foul shots in the final 26 seconds to lift Hollins to the 10-point victory.
Hopkins led HU with 18 points, seven rebounds, five assists and two steals. Junior forward Mandy Nichols (Troutville, Va./Lord Botetourt) added 12 points and five boards, while sophomore guard Emily Ferrell (Roanoke, Va./Northside) chipped in with 10 points, three rebounds and three assists.
Babst led W&L with 20 points, 13 rebounds, five blocks and three steals. Junior forward Jessica Mentz (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) added 15 points and 11 rebounds.
W&L will round out its season tomorrow afternoon as it hosts Roanoke at 2:00 pm.
