W&L Women's Basketball Defeats Mary Washington, 52-35

LEXINGTON, Va. – Washington and Lee senior forward Jessica Mentz (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) recorded her sixth double-double (20 pts., 13 reb.) in as many games to lead the Generals' women's basketball team to a 52-35 victory over non-conference foe Mary Washington on Tuesday evening at the Warner Center.

Mary Washington held a slim 16-15 lead with 7:15 remaining in the first half, however, failed to score for the duration of the half. The Generals took advantage by using a 6-0 run keyed by a pair of jumpers from freshman guard Bethany Dannelly (Raleigh, N.C./William G. Enloe) to take a 21-16 lead at halftime.

The game was tight for the first 10 minutes of the second half as MWC trailed just 36-30 with 9:38 to play. However, the Generals pulled away using a 12-2 run over the next five minutes to take a commanding 48-32 lead with 4:34 to play.

W&L (2-4) senior center Megan Babst (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) totaled nine points and 12 rebounds, while senior guard Sarah Schmidt (Topeka, Kan./Hayden) tallied eight points, four rebounds, three blocked shots and two steals.

Mary Washington (1-6) was paced by senior guard Caitlin Wilkinson (East Greenwich, R.I./Greenwich) who scored a team-high 11 points.

W&L outrebounded the Eagles, 42-26.

The Generals will not be in action again until Jan. 2 when they host Greensboro.
