W&L Women's Basketball Falls At Guilford, 62-47

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Guilford held the Washington and Lee woman's basketball team without a field goal for the first 8:23 of the game and defeated the Generals, 62-47, in ODAC women's basketball action on Sunday afternoon at the Ragan-Brown Field House.

The Quakers stormed to an 18-9 lead with just under eight minutes to play, however, the Generals used a 7-2 run capped by a layup from junior guard Elizabeth Igo (Claymont, Del./Archmere Academy). to cut the lead to five points at 20-15 with 4:47 to play. Guilford led 23-17 at the half.

Guilford (4-1, 3-0 ODAC) began the second half with an 8-0 spurt to open a 31-27 lead. The Quakers extended their lead to as many as 17 points (39-22) with 12:25 to play. W&L then went on a 7-0 run keyed by a traditional three-point play from senior forward Jessica Mentz (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) to cut the lead to 39-29.

W&L (1-4, 1-2 ODAC) would get no closer the rest of the way, as Guilford held the Generals to just 10 made field goals on 35 attempts for the entire afternoon. The Generals connected on 26-of-34 (.765) free throws.

W&L committed a season-high 37 turnovers, which Guilford turned into 33 points.

Mentz led the Generals with her fifth double-double in as many games this season as she tallied 24 points and 12 boards. Senior center Megan Babst (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) chipped in with 10 points and eight rebounds.

The Quakers were led by senior guard Erin Beacham, who scored 16 points. She also grabbed six rebounds and dished out four assists.

The Generals will be in action again on Tuesday evening when they host Mary Washington at 7:00 pm.
