W&L Falls To Lynchburg, 66-56, In ODAC Opener

LYNCHBURG, VA – The Washington and Lee woman's basketball team lost its third straight game as Lynchburg handed the Generals a 66-56 setback in the ODAC opener for both teams on Wednesday evening.

The Generals led 24-23 at the half behind 16 points from senior center Megan Babst (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel). W&L opened a seven-point edge (35-29) with 12:55 left in the game before the Hornets fought back.

Lynchburg went on a 10-0 run in the next minute and a half, sparked by five points from sophomore forward Whitney Yates (Roanoke, VA/William Byrd) and a three-point play from senior Johari Bass (Roseland, VA/Nelson County) to take a 39-36 advantage.

The Hornets led the rest of the way, but were only ahead one point with 2:28 on the game clock. Senior Jess Hott (Beaverdam, VA/Patrick Henry) drilled a key three-point basket and Lynchburg made seven of eight free throws down the stretch to ice the game.

Babst led all scorers with 25 points, hitting on 11-of-19 attempts from the floor, and added 10 rebounds and four blocked shots. Jessica Mentz (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) posted 18 points and 13 boards for Washington and Lee (0-3, 0-1 ODAC).

Yates had a team-high 14 points for the Hornets, and sophomore Abby Pyzik (Westminster, MD/Mercy) added 13.

W&L returns to action when it hosts Randolph-Macon on Saturday at 4:00 pm.
