LEXINGTON, VA. -- The Washington and Lee men's soccer team advanced to the ODAC Tournament Finals for the second consecutive season with a 1-0 victory over Hampden-Sydney in semifinal action on Friday afternoon on the Liberty Hall Fields.
The Generals scored the lone goal with 16:20 gone by in the first half when senior sweeper Paul Wallace (Roanoke, Va./Patrick Henry) chipped a shot over Tiger goalkeeper Austin Krison (Birmingham, Ala./Mountian Brook) that rolled into the net.
Hampden-Sydney (13-6-1) appeared to tie the game at 1-1 eight minutes later, but an apparent goal by sophomore Pat Whitehead (Williamsburg, Va./Walsingham Academy) was nullified by an offside call.
W&L (12-3-1) junior goalkeeper Tim Foley (Darnestown, Md./Georgetown Prep) made four saves to earn his fourth shutout of the season. Krison made three saves in the losing effort.
The Generals and Tigers each took seven shots, but Hampden-Sydney held a 10-2 advantage in corner kicks.
W&L returns to action on Saturday afternoon when it squares off on the Liberty Hall Fields against Roanoke at 1:30 pm in the ODAC Finals. The winner will receive an automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Championships.
