W&L Men's Soccer Knocks Off 15th-Ranked Roanoke, 3-1

LEXINGTON, VA.. -- The Washington and Lee men's soccer team won its sixth consecutive game as it handed Roanoke its first conference loss of the season, 3-1, on Saturday afternoon on the Liberty Hall Fields. The Maroons entered the contest as the 15th-ranked team in Division III.

The Generals jumped on the Maroons early as sophomore midfielder Jacob Stoehr (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights) took a cross from junior forward Brad Murphy (Mantoloking, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) and scored his fifth goal of the season. The score remained 1-0 until halftime.

W&L (7-1-1, 6-0 ODAC) took a 2-0 lead at the 51:57 mark as Murphy tallied a breakaway goal. Roanoke came back less than one minute later as freshman forward Tsuyoshi Oshika (Aichi, Japan/Shoin) knocked in a loose ball in front of the goal. The Generals put the game away when freshman forward Justin Mygatt (Winston, Ga./Woodward Academy) scored on a breakaway goal after sophomore midfielder Philip Miller (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) played a through ball to him.

W&L junior goalkeeper Tim Foley (Darnestown, Md./Georgetown Prep) made seven saves to earn the victory. Roanoke (9-2, 4-1 ODAC) sophomore goalkeeper Chris Ebeling (Ellicott City, Md./Oakland Mills) made two saves in the losing effort.

W&L returns to action on Monday when it hosts Southern Virginia at 4:00 pm.
