W&L Football Knocks Off Catholic, 18-12

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee held Catholic to just 19 yards rushing in defeating the Cardinals, 18-12, in ODAC football action at Wilson Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Generals trailed Catholic 12-7 in the fourth quarter before CUA junior Dennis Campbell (Silver Spring, Md./Paint Branch) fumbled a kick return on his own five yard line with 11:35 left to play. W&L senior linebacker Jeff Bahl (Cincinnati, Ohio/Cincinnati Country Day) forced the fumble and his brother, Andrew Bahl (Cincinnati, Ohio/Cincinnati Country Day) recovered the ball.

W&L (2-3, 2-1) took advantage two plays later as senior running back Marc Watson (Marietta, Ga./Walton) scored from one yard out. The touchdown was the 29th in Watson's career, tying the school record for career touchdowns set by Kevin Weaver (1983-86). The Generals attempt at a two-point conversion was good and they led 15-12.

W&L upped its lead to 18-12 with 7:08 remaining as senior placekicker Brad Wiginton (Plano, Texas/Plano Senior) nailed a 31-yard field goal.

The Cardinals (1-4, 0-2) failed to convert on a 4th-and-10 play from the W&L 30 yard line with 2:17 remaining in the game. However, CUA got the ball back with 1:30 remaining and drove to the Generals' 36 yard line before senior quarterback Derek McGee (Shamong, N.J./Cherokee) was picked off by W&L sophomore safety Ted Maffitt (Houtson, Texas/Episcopal). Maffitt returned the ball to the Catholic 11 yard line and the Generals ran out the clock for their second ODAC victory of the season.

The Generals were led by Watson, who caught 10 passes for 70 yards and rushed seven times for 31 yards and a touchdown. Junior running back Chris Sullivan (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights) rushed 31 times for 80 yards and one touchdown, while sophomore quarterback Peter Dean (Vienna, Va./James Madison) completed 19-of-32 attempts for 154 yards. Jeff Bahl led the W&L defense with 10 tackles and two sacks.

Catholic was paced by McGee, who completed 22-of-53 attempts for 241 yards and one touchdown. He was intercepted twice. Freshman wide receiver Nick Bublavi (Norwood, Pa./Interboro) caught seven passes for 90 yards and one touchdown. Junior linebacker Jeff Tabery (Saylorsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) recorded a game-high 12 tackles and assisted on a sack.

The Generals will return to action next Saturday when they travel to Hampden-Sydney for a 1:00 pm contest.
