LEXINGTON, Va. -- Christopher Newport used two first half goals and held on to defeat Washington and Lee, 2-1, in field hockey action on the W&L Turf Field on Sunday afternoon.
The Lady Captains (8-5) jumped on the board with 17:52 to play in the first half as freshman forward Megan McCreedy (Stafford, Va./North Stafford) tallied a goal off an assist from junior midfielder Shannon Lia (Yorktown, Va./Tabb). Christopher Newport extended its lead to 2-0 with 5:32 to play in the first half as senior forward Wendy Wilson (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison) scored off an assist from McCreedy.
The Generals cut the deficit in half with 14:27 to play as sophomore forward Jessica Lake (Montogomery Village, Md./Watkins Mill) received a pass from sophomore forward Kelly Taffe (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) and scored her fourth goal of the season.
W&L senior goalkeeper Deidra MacLeod (Weston, Mass./Weston) played the first 35 minutes in goal and recorded three saves. Sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Rosario (Bangor, Pa./Bangor) tallied one save in the second half. Christopher Newport freshman goalkeeper Jessica Trosclair (Stafford, Va./North Stafford) made 12 saves to earn the victory.
The loss concludes the season for W&L. The Generals finished their first season as a varsity sport with an overall record of 3-10, including a 2-7 mark in the ODAC.
