Generals Drop Second Straight, 58-50

NORFOLK, Va. -- Virginia Wesleyan used a 13-4 run in the final 4:59 of the second half to hand Washington and Lee its second consecutive conference loss, 58-50, in ODAC women's basketball action on Monday evening in Norfolk, Va.

W&L (4-5, 3-3) trailed 30-18 at the half and 36-24 with 17:13 to play in the second half before rallying on an 18-3 run to take the lead, 42-39, with 10:52 remaining.

Junior center Megan Babst (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) hit a foul line jumper at the 7:44 mark of the second half to give the Generals a 46-43 lead. VWC (3-6, 3-3) answered right back after Angie Cavanuagh converted a three-point play with 4:59 to play to tie the contest, 46-46.

After Tomorrow Lofton connected one one-of-two free throws at the 4:24 mark, junior forward Jessica Mentz (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) put the Generals back on top, 48-47, after a lay-up at the 3:59 mark. Devin Allen, who led all scorers with 17 points, then put the Blue Marlins in front for good after hitting a 15-foot jump shot with 3:08 left, making the score 49-48. Virginia Wesleyan outscored W&L, 9-2, over the last three minutes.

Babst led W&L with 16 points and a game-high 17 rebounds. She also added five assists, four blocks and one steal. Mentz chipped in 14 points and nine rebounds.

The Blue Marlins were led by Allen and Janine Swanson, who posted a double-double with 11 points and 11 boards.

Washington and Lee will return to action on Thursday, January 11, as it hosts Randolph-Macon Woman's College in 7:00 pm contest.
