LEXINGTON, Va. -- Sophomore forward Scott Hettermann's (Falls Church, Va./Landon) layup with 16 seconds remaining gave Washington and Lee a 46-45 lead as the Generals defeated Emory & Henry, 47-45, in ODAC Men's Basketball action on Wednesday evening at the Warner Center.
Emory & Henry (5-11, 2-8) had a chance to win with the last possession, but sophomore guard Paul Russo (Cary, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) was stripped by W&L junior forward Bob Bustamante (Miami, Fla./Christopher Columbus) with two seconds remaining and senior guard Will Ballard (Elkin, N.C./Elkin) hit one of two free throws immediately thereafter to ice the win.
W&L (3-14, 3-9) shot just 31.8 percent for the game as compared to 36.2 percent for Emory & Henry. However, the Generals hit 16-of-24 foul shots.
Washington and Lee was led by senior guard Chad Braley (Huntington, W.Va./Paul Blazer), who scored a game-high 13 points. Ballard totaled 11 points, while Hettermann's game-winning basket gave him eight points for the game.
The Wasps were led by sophomore forward Cortez Watson (Davenport, Fla./Oak Ridge), who tallied nine points, while senior forward Scott Smith (Bristol, Tenn./Tennessee) notched eight points.
Washington and Lee will return to action on Saturday as it travels to Roanoke College for a 7:00 pm contest.
