Randolph-Macon Defeats W&L, 74-65

ASHLAND, Va. -- Randolph-Macon broke open a 32-21 halftime lead with a 26-9 run in the first 10:41 of the second half and cruised to a 74-65 victory over W&L in men's basketball action on Sunday afternoon in Ashland, Va.

Jared Mills led the way for the Yellow Jackets during the second-half stretch with 10 of his team-high 14 points.

The Generals stayed with Randolph-Macon (9-7, 6-4) in the early going and knotted the score at 20 after a lay-up by freshman center John Saxon (Jackson, Miss./Jackson Prep). However, the Yellow Jackets responded with a 10-1 run led by Jamal Brunt's two three-point goals to head into the half with an 11-point cushion.

Senior guard Will Ballard (Elkin, N.C./Elkin) scored 10 of his 14 points late in the second half, but W&L (2-14, 2-9) could get no closer than nine points.

W&L was led by Saxon, who tallied a career-high 16 points and added six rebounds and two blocks. Ballard added a career-high 11 rebounds to his 14 points. Junior forward Bob Bustamante (Miami, Fla./Christopher Columbus) chipped in with 13 points, while senior guard Chad Braley (Huntington, W.Va./Paul Blazer) finished with 11 points.

Randolph-Macon was led by Mills's 14 points and five rebounds. Kurt Bergmann added 12 points and six boards for the Yellow Jackets.

The Generals were held to just over 40 percent shooting from the floor (23-of-57), while Randolph-Macon shot over 55 percent in the second half to finish the contest at just under 52 percent (27-of-52).

W&L will return home on Wednesday, Jan. 24, as it entertains Emory & Henry for the first time this season in the Warner Center. Tip-off is set for 7:00 pm.
