Mentz Scores 1,000th Point, But Generals Fall To Roanoke, 63-45

SALEM, Va. -- Roanoke jumped out to a 28-5 lead it would never relinquish in the game's first 13:21 and defeated Washington and Lee, 63-45, in ODAC women's hoops action on Saturday afternoon in Salem, Va.

The Maroons (9-5, 7-2) took a 39-19 halftime lead, forcing 19 turnovers by the Generals.

W&L (5-9, 4-7) tried to claw its way back into the ballgame by starting the second half on a 14-3 run that cut the Roanoke lead to 42-33 with 15:08 to play. However, Crystal Barrett scored eight of her team-high 22 points in the final 10 minutes to clinch the 18-point victory. Barrett also pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds.

Jill Quesenberry was the only other Maroon in double figures with 10 points.

W&L was led by junior forward Jessica Mentz (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial), who scored a team-high 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Mentz also became the third player in W&L history to break the 1,000-point plateau and now has tallied 1,008 career points. Junior center Megan Babst (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) added 15 points, seven boards, three assists and three blocks.

The Generals shot 50 percent from the floor (19-of-38), while holding the Maroons to just under 42 percent (27-of-65). Roanoke outrebounded W&L, 33-28, and caused 35 Washington and Lee turnovers.

W&L returns home on Tuesday evening, Jan. 23, to host Guilford at 7:00 pm.
