HOLLINS, Va. -- Mandy Nichols scored 11 of her team-high 21 points in the final 4:12 of the second half to lead Hollins to a 57-54 victory over Washington and Lee in ODAC women's basketball action on Friday evening in Hollins, Va.
After a three pointer by Rosse Hopkins at the 10:31 mark of the second half, Hollins (5-6, 2-5) led 39-34. W&L then answered with a 14-2 run over the next 5:50 to take a seven-point lead, 48-41. Junior center Megan Babst (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) led the comeback with eight of her game-high 26 points during the stretch.
Hollins fought right back with an 8-0 run over the ensuing 1:43 to take a one-point lead at 49-48. Nichols' late heroics then sealed the win for HU as she hit 6-of-7 attempts from the foul line.
Hollins was led by Nichols and Hopkins, who collected 19 points, eight rebounds and four assists. HU shot just under 30 percent (20-of-67) in the game.
W&L (5-8, 4-6) was led by Babst's 26-point, 18-rebound performance. She also added two assists and went 8-of-10 from the free throw line. Junior forward Jessica Mentz (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) added 13 points and eight rebounds. Mentz now needs 14 points to become the third player in W&L history to eclipse the 1,000-point mark.
The Generals will be back in action tomorrow afternoon as they travel to Salem, Va., to take on Roanoke in a 4:00 pm contest.
