LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Beth Carter scored 19 points and grabbed five rebounds to help Lynchburg College past Washington and Lee, 66-55, in ODAC women's basketball action on Wednesday evening.
The Hornets outscored W&L 24-10 in the opening 12:31 of the game, before the Generals sliced the Hornet lead to just six points (30-24) at the half. However, Lynchburg again went on a 20-7 run over the first 9:15 of the second half to take a 50-31 advantage with 10:31 remaining. As in the first half, the Generals posted a run of their own, 17-4, over the next 7:29 to cut the Hornet lead to six points (54-48) with 3:02 remaining, but Lynchburg made each of its 10 free throws in the final 1:31 to post the win.
W&L shot 48.3 percent from the floor in the second half, but could not overcome 24.1 percent shooting in the opening period.
Joining Carter in double figures for the Hornets was Johari Bass with 11 points and 10 rebounds and Abby Pyzik, Mindy Hohing and Lehticia Deskins, who each scored 10 points.
Washington and Lee was led by junior center Megan Babst's (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) 19-point, 13-rebound effort. Junior forward Jessica Mentz (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) added 16 points and eight rebounds.
W&L will be in action again on Friday as it travels to Hollins University for a 7:00 pm matchup.
