Sewanee, Tenn. -- The Washington and Lee women's soccer team lost its season-opener on Saturday afternoon to Emory University, 4-1, at the Sewanee Tournament.
Emory jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first 24 minutes of the contest on goals by Jayme Yarow, Amber Poe and Caroline Hoit.
W&L came right back with an unassisted goal from freshman forward Susannah Hewlett (Charlottesville, Va./Charlottesville) at the 25:19 mark. Emory goalkeeper Andrea Pawliczak held W&L scoreless for the rest of the game.
The Generals (0-1) were outshot by Emory 24-13. Hewlett and senior forward Shana Levine (Hudson, Oh./Hudson) led W&L with three shots each.
Senior goalkeeper Lauren Harris (Cincinnati, Oh./Indian Hill) recorded 20 saves for the Generals.
The Generals will look to regroup against Meredith College on Sunday at 11:00 am in the second round of the tournament.
