HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Senior forward Andy Crawford (Durham, N.C./Durham Academy) scored two first half goals as Washington and Lee tied a school record with six consecutive victories by defeating Hampden-Sydney, 4-0 in ODAC men's soccer action on Thursday afternoon.
The win marked the fourth time in W&L history that a team won six consecutive games and the first time since 1989. It also marked only the second time in school history that the Generals started off the season with six straight victories. The previous year was 1964 when the Generals finished 7-2-1.
Crawford's first tally came three minutes into the game to give Washington and Lee (6-0, 3-0 ODAC) a 1-0 lead. He then scored at the 24:38 mark off a feed from junior midfielder Rick Schnatz (Darnestown, Md./Quince Orchard) to make the score 2-0 at the half.
Schnatz notched his first goal of the season in the 80th minute to add to the lead. Sophomore defender Sean Hardin (Atlanta, Ga./The Westminster Schools) rounded out the scoring at the 82:58 mark off an assist from freshman midfielder Philip Miller (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood).
Sophomore goalkeeper Tim Foley (Darnestown, Md./Georgetown Prep) recorded his third victory of the season by stopping all four shots that he faced. Hampden-Sydney (6-4, 2-1 ODAC) outshot the Generals, 12-11.
W&L will return to the Liberty Hall Fields to host Lynchburg College on Saturday afternoon at 11 am.
