W&L Men's Soccer Wins Thriller

BUENA VISTA, Va. -- Washington and Lee University senior midfielder Ryan Nelson (Bel Air, Md./C.Milton Wright) scored with 1:09 remaining to give the Generals a 3-2 win over Southern Virginia in men's soccer action on Thursday.

Nelson took a feed from junior midfielder Rick Schnatz (Darnestown, Md./Quince Orchard) and fired a long range shot into the upper right corner for the victory. Schnatz notched two assists on the day.

Junior midfielder Andrew Grimes (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay) got the Generals on the board at the 9:28 mark, assisted by senior forward Andy Crawford (Durham, N.C./Durham Academy). Grimes then gave the Generals a 2-0 lead with a header at the 22:22 mark off a cross from Schnatz.

Southern Virginia fought back with two early second half goals. Ryan Lenahan scored at the 49:00 mark, and Ben Lingen scored off a free kick nine minutes later.

Sophomore goalkeeper Tim Foley (Darnestown, Md./Broughton) picked up his second straight win for W&L. He made two saves in the net. W&L outshot the Knights, 19-5.

The Generals return home Saturday as they host Randolph-Macon in ODAC play at 1:30 pm.
