Yellow Jackets Sting W&L Women, 70-62

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Senior center Renee Zando (Yorktown, Va./Tabb) erupted for 16 points, 14 rebounds, six blocks, and six steals in leading the Randolph-Macon Yellow Jackets to a 70-62 win over Washington and Lee in the Warner Center.

R-MC (12-8, 11-5 ODAC) jumped out to an 11-0 lead just 4:11 into the contest. From there, W&L never recovered. The closest the Generals would come was within one point (33-32) with 17:28 remaining. That rally was quickly quieted by a three-pointer by senior guard Beth Richard (Fredericksburg, Va./James Monroe). W&L would never seriously challenge the Yellow Jackets again.

Zando connected on 7-of-15 shots from the floor en route to her 16 markers. Also scoring 16 points was senior forward Bren Elliott (Waynesboro, Va./Waynesboro). The only other Yellow Jacket player in double-figures was Richard with 11 points.

The Generals (11-9, 8-8 ODAC) placed four players in double-figures. The contingent was led by senior guard Jessica Morton (Midlothian, Va./Clover Hill) with 17 points, including 8-of-8 from the charity stripe. Sophomores Megan Babst (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) and Jessica Mentz (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) tallied 14 and 12 points in the post for W&L. Sophomore guard Carter Thomas (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) chipped in 10 points.

Washington and Lee hit 40 percent of its shots from the floor, but was not able to take care of the ball, committing 26 turnovers. Randolph-Macon shot 44.3 percent on the evening.

W&L will return to action on Thursday, February 8, when it hosts Hollins University in a 7:00 pm contest.
