LEXINGTON Va. -- Senior guard Ansley Miller (Athens, Ga./Athens Academy) hit for a team-high 17 points in leading the Washington and Lee women's basketball team to a 60-57 upset of ODAC-leader Bridgewater College on Thursday night in Lexington.
W&L (11-7, 8-6 ODAC) jumped out to a 23-20 halftime lead, but trailed by as many as four points (48-44) with 7:07 remaining in the contest. The teams battled back and forth until sophomore Sarah Schmidt (Topeka, Kan./Hayden) hit a running layup with 1:51 remaining to give the Generals a 53-51 lead which they would not relinquish. Senior guard Jessica Morton (Midlothian, Va./Clover Hill) connected on 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch to nail down the Generals' upset win.
Miller tallied her 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting, including 2-of-3 from behind the three-point arc. Sophomore center Megan Babst (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) notched 14 points and three blocks for the Generals, while Morton ended up with 13 points.
Bridgewater (14-4, 11-3) was led by senior center Amanda Kyger (Timberville, Va./Broadway), who amassed game-highs in points (23) and rebounds (10). Other Eagles in double figures included sophomore guard Lindsay Coleman (Buena Vista, Va./Parry McCluer) with 11 points, and Angela Osborn (Burlington Flats, N.Y./Edmeston) with 10.
Washington and Lee shot nearly 49 percent from the field during the game, including a scorching 52.2 percent in the second half, while holding the Eagles to just 28.8 percent. W&L outrebounded Bridgewater by a count of 35-31.
W&L will return to action on Saturday, February 5, when it travels to Emory & Henry for a 4:00 pm contest.
