SALEM, Va. -- Sixth-seeded Washington and Lee shot 50 percent from the floor (18-36), 50 percent from three-point land (9-18), and 75 percent (15-20) from the free throw line, but it wasn't enough as Roanoke edged the Generals, 66-60, in the Semifinals of the ODAC Tournament in Salem, Va.
W&L shot 55.6 percent and led by as many as six points on several occasions in posting a 29-27 halftime advantage.
The Generals (9-16) held the lead until the 15:47 mark of the second half, when Colby Leftwich gave the Maroons a 35-34 lead on a lay-up. W&L could not regain the lead although it made things nip-and-tuck for much of the remainder of the game before the Maroons (22-4) pulled away late in the contest.
W&L was led by freshman forward Ryan Small (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park), who scored 14 points on 3-of-5 shooting from beyond the three-point arc. Junior guard Will Ballard (Elkin, N.C./Elkin) notched 13 points and tied a career-high with seven rebounds, while senior center Brian Ricketts (Memphis, Tenn./Memphis University School) scored 10 points and grabbed five rebounds. Ricketts set a new ODAC Tournament record by going 13-for-13 from the free throw line in the Generals' two games. Ballard was 9-of-9 from the line in the tournament as well.
Jason Strickland led Roanoke with 20 points on 8-of-9 shooting from the floor. He also grabbed eight rebounds and tied an ODAC Tournament record with eight steals in the game. Brad Dunleavy notched 15 points, while Colby Leftwich tallied 11 points and five boards.
